How often is the taxonomy updated?

    Hi Ashley,

To answer your question directly, the answer is "not very often." A core principle of the ATUM taxonomy is to provide stability and remain consistent. Since the initial adoption of ATUM 1.0 by the TBM Council in May of 2014, there has only been one major update to the Taxonomy since - ATUM 2.0 which was ratified in late 2016. For extremely custom projects, there exists the flexibility to customize the Taxonomy, but this is far from preferred since it frequently breaks out of the box reports and prevents benchmarking, two features customers tend to benefit greatly from.

    Hi Ashley and Martin,

Just want to be clear here: Ashley is asking about the TBM Taxonomy I believe, not the Apptio TBM Unified Model.

The TBM Taxonomy is maintained by the Standards Committee and we anticipate annual updates, although there may be minor updates in between. Specifically, we now have a subcommittee focused on TBM Taxonomy Evolution, which is chaired by Michel Brassart of HPE (soon DXC Technology, the spin-off from HPE and CSC). The subcommittee is working toward the next version now, hoping for a release later this year. Whether or not that will be v3.0 is yet to be determined, as is its release date. When it is released, it will be ratified by the TBM Council's board of directors as well.

Apptio incorporates changes made by the Council pursuant to its product release plan. Since EHayman@apptio.com">Ed Hayman from Apptio sits on the subcommittee, he is fully apprised of all work being done.

    Hope this helps.

Todd is correct.  The TBM Taxonomy Evolution sub-committee is actively meeting to review feedback from TBM practitioners and helping to identify gaps, areas for improved definitions and other materials to improve the understanding and use of the taxonomy in supporting TBM initiatives.

One area of focus right now is to broaden the input to include members of the TBM community here on TBM Connect.  To that end, we will be posting a series of questions asking for input and voting on whether certain categories should be added or modified in the taxonomy.  Look for these posts shortly.

    Thanks,

    Ed
