  • 1.  Building a tier 3 for Towers

    Posted 11-16-2021 18:52
Due to the diversity of operating systems, security systems concerns, and complex applications existing today it is taking more time to push OS patches, manage workarounds, and hunt down noncompliance. We have a full team managing this as we are also  anticipating increases  in W10 updates, SQL retirements, and eventual transition to W11. With this extra level resource team we are looking to capture this in greater depth and are looking at building a tier 3 for workspace and or end user software, has anyone else gone down this path, if so where did you land and how is it working out?

    Hi Jason,

I have done this at my previous company, but it was mainly for granularity into our End User Services (End User, Workspace, Laptop) and for things like Servers and Platforms. I am not sure if this is what you are referring to, but I can say that it was very beneficial for moving costs to the appropriate Business Services we created for our Bill of IT. The only hard part is making sure the data we were receiving was tagged appropriately to match the levels we were creating. This included mapping costs appropriately from object to object. It took us awhile to re-configure our model, but the end result allowed us to track at a more granular level for reporting purposes. Hope this helps!

It's not difficult to achieve if details within your Cost Source (or other subordinate object below the ITRT object) contain sufficient details to allocate at that level.

In my experience, the Actual spend information is usually missing sufficient details while Budget and Forecast data have a higher chance of detail being available...especially if using IT Planning (or similar product that IT Finance / TBMO teams control).

I would let the business need drive this level of granularity. It gets more complex as you move up the taxonomy to services and continue to allocate from a third level in towers. If you are satisfied with tower level reporting at this level and service cost derived from allocations at a higher level then the complexity goes down
