The term "Tower" originated from the outsourcing community decades ago. When many companies outsource they target specific "towers" they plan to award to their chosen outsourcing vendors. Even today, certain outsourcers have a best-of-breed reputation for specific towers that they are often selected to take over and run as a service (e.g. compute vs. storage vs. network etc...). Many of us in the business for a long time recall this use of the term, and others learned about it via TBM, and/or while writing the book.
