Modernizing Technology Business Management

Framework 2.0 and Taxonomy 5.0 drive the next generation of tech value management

As we approach the TBM Conference 2024, it’s an exciting time for our community. Technology is more important – and more complex – than ever.  Technology leaders are winning when they move beyond cost and show how tech delivers value for the company’s customers and employees. This is not a trivial shift, it is a  critical one.  CXOs require a proven approach for making data-driven decisions that encourage superior technology investments that deliver value for business customers, citizens, and employees. TBM is the global standard that CXOs need for demonstrating the value that your technology delivers.

Keeping with the rapid pace of technology, it is an imperative that we continually evolve TBM.  This November, we will unveil significant advancements to the foundational elements of Technology Business Management (TBM) to enable you to stay current as your technology advances. I am thrilled to share that during the TBM Conference 2024, we will showcase the first public preview of TBM Framework 2.0 and TBM Taxonomy 5.0. These new standards reflect the ongoing evolution of the technology industry, and they were developed with invaluable input from our diverse TBM Community. The updates reinforce TBM’s role as the industry standard for creating business value from technology and position TBM as the dominant discipline that integrates context-aware insights from specialized practices like ITFM, FinOps and SPM (among others). This elevates contributions in those areas to overall business value and provides a holistic view of technology’s value to the business.

Why These Updates Matter

The TBM Framework is your blueprint for building a successful and sustainable TBM discipline.  TBM Framework 2.0 organizes standards, capabilities, and foundational elements of TBM leveraging a set of guiding principles and recognizing organization maturity.  This  helps organizations to improve the discipline to deliver increasing levels of value.

TBM Taxonomy 5.0 adds enhanced support for AI and cloud solutions. AI is playing a larger and accelerating role in technology strategies across industries. With more organizations relying on AI to gain insights, automate tasks, and create new products and services, this update solidifies TBM as the critical discipline for capturing ROI and realizing value from AI investments. For public cloud,  we have elevated visibility into cloud  consumption . Combined with TBM Taxonomy’s well established strengths for modeling and managing on-prem infrastructure costs, this new taxonomy supports the ongoing shift to hybrid cloud strategies and helps maximize cloud investments.

Both the new Framework and Taxonomy create new opportunities to  integrate IT Financial Management (ITFM) and FinOps practices, ensuring every type of technology investment drives maximum value regardless of the delivery methodology or platform. In short, TBM is more capable than ever of helping leaders make informed decisions in the age of cloud and AI.

To better understand the new TBM, look for our newest eBook, the TBM Executive Overview, that will be released during the conference.  It is an essential resource for introducing Technology Business Management to executives and new practitioners.  This guide conveys what TBM is, how it has evolved, introduces the new standards  (Framework 2.0 and Taxonomy 5.0), and demonstrates the value potential for modern organizations.  It’s the ideal reference for anyone seeking a clear understanding of how the evolving TBM drives business value in today’s complex and rapidly changing technology landscape.

We Want Your Feedback

These new standards are still in active development, and we need your input to ensure they serve the entire TBM community. That’s why we’ll be opening a public comment period during the TBM Conference. This is your opportunity to provide feedback, offer suggestions, and help shape the future of TBM. You’ll find a link to the comment portal during the event, and I encourage everyone to participate.

Sneak Peek: State of TBM 2024

Did you know that 92% of TBM practitioners have reduced the cost to serve customers in the past two years? Well, if you didn’t know, you soon will. We are excited to share an early preview of the findings from our State of TBM 2024 research effort. The TBM Council conducts this annual survey to track trends, challenges, and opportunities within the TBM discipline. If you haven’t yet contributed to this year’s survey, there’s still time to have your voice heard—head over to the 2024 State of TBM Survey to participate.

TBM Conference 2024

TBM Conference 2024 is a great opportunity to bring our TBM community together. We will dive deeper into these exciting developments as well as a host of other areas that will help you succeed with TBM. We hope to see you there.
